Heckle Hagen

In Loving Memory of Heckle Hagen
May 11, 2014 – August 20, 2025
Forever Mama’s Big Boy 🐓❤️

Born on Mother’s Day, May 11, 2014, at his family’s farm in Kershaw, SC, Heckle Hagen was the very first chick to hatch there—alongside his twin and inseparable brother, Jeckle. From that day forward, he became not just a rooster, but a beloved companion, protector, and comforter to his mom, Kim Hagen.

Known affectionately as Baby Bird and Mama’s Big Boy, Heckle lived a life full of love and character. His favorite pastimes were simple yet meaningful: being with his chicken family outdoors, nibbling on blueberries and mealworms, and enjoying the company of those who cherished him most.

Heckle made many memories that will forever be treasured:

  • As a young rooster, he bravely stood with Jeckle to protect their hens from a hawk, proving his courage and loyalty from the start.
  • He loved car rides, perched proudly on a styrofoam cooler so he could dig in his toes while visiting the bank, the feed store, or even Walmart with his mom.
  • When Kim struggled with nightmares during her last year of work, Heckle became her dreamcatcher, sleeping indoors and bringing her comfort through the darkest nights.
  • Always gentle and quiet, he had a funny quirk—whenever his mom was on the phone, Heckle would crow loudly until she hung up, reminding everyone who the real boss was.
  • In a moment of pure rooster pride, he once confronted a realistic-looking decoy rooster—chest-bumping, stomping, and doing everything in his power to “subdue” it.

Heckle passed peacefully in his mom’s arms on August 20, 2025, at 8:20 AM, a fitting time of love and symmetry for such a special soul. He leaves behind his feathered family, Kitty, and his mom, who adored him for every moment of his 11 beautiful years.

Rest peacefully, Heckle.
You were not only a protector of the flock but also a guardian of your mom’s heart. You will forever be her Baby Bird, her Big Boy, and her dreamcatcher. 🐓❤️
